Direct deposit: routing without mystery

Routing and account numbers are not interchangeable - swap them and deposits bounce.

First setup

Direct deposit sends pay through the ACH network from your employer's bank to yours. You typically provide a routing number, account number, and whether the account is checking or savings. Some forms also ask for a voided check or a bank letter - follow what your payroll portal requests, not what a random PDF on the internet shows.

Routing numbers identify the financial institution; account numbers identify your specific bucket. Transposing digits is the most common self-inflicted delay. Enter them once, then read them aloud backward to catch reversals.

Split deposits are common: a fixed amount to savings and the remainder to checking. Test with a small split first if the tool allows. fligclouck.com will never ask for your credentials; only your employer's secured portal should collect banking details.

Verify it worked

After setup, watch the first live check - not a penny test unless payroll offers one. Compare the deposit description on your banking app to the net on the stub. Names vary: PAYROLL, ADP, company legal name, or an abbreviation.

Pending versus posted states confuse people during bank maintenance windows. If funds appear on the stub PDF but not in the account after 48 hours, call the bank with the trace number payroll provides. They can see returns you cannot.

Keep the confirmation screen PDF when the portal shows success. It timestamps your submission if a typo caused a return.

Changing banks

Switching banks during a pay week is delicate. Open the new account, submit deposit instructions, and leave the old account open until one successful deposit lands. Some employers issue a live check for the transition - ask before you close anything.

Name changes on accounts do not always require new routing numbers, but marriage or legal name updates should match HR records to avoid fraud holds. Update HR profile and banking on the same day when possible.

If a deposit returns, payroll often needs a paper form with wet ink. Electronic fixes sometimes cannot override a return flag. Act quickly; returned pay can become a paper check mailed to your last address on file.
